Langkawi is located in the north of Malaysia. The bus journey will take 7 – 8 hours from KL to Kuala Perlis. Buses depart from TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) Station and some from Hentian Duta Station to take passengers.
The cheapest bus fare will start from RM 45 – 60 ($9.6 to 13) depending on the bus service.
The cheapest way to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi is to take a bus. Firstly, you can take a bus from Kuala Lumpur to the ferry terminal of Kuala Perlis. And now take the ferry that leaves every hour.
The fare starts from RM 45 – 60 ($) and then RM 18 for the ferry. The total fare is about RM 62 ($13.3). The bus will take 7 hours and 10 minutes approximately + 1 hour ferry to reach Langkawi island.
I find a flight in just RM 48 ($) that took 50 minutes to reach KL to Langkawi.
The total distance from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi Island is approximately 515 kilometers when you are traveling by road. Firstly, you have to travel from KL to Kuala Perlis which is about 475 km, then take the shortest boat journey from there. The distance from Kuala Perlis to Langkawi is 37 km.
Kuala Perlis to Langkawi by Ferry
As you know Langkawi is an island city. The bus will leave you near the ferry terminal. Just a 5-minute walk to Kuala Perlis jetty (Jetty means ferry terminal).
First Ferry departs to Langkawi at 7 am in the morning and the last ferry is at 7 pm in the evening. Travelers can buy the ferry ticket online or buy over the counter.
The ferry takes 1 hour and 15 minutes to reach Langkawi and the fare is about RM 18($3.85) for adults and RM 13 ($2.8) for children.
Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi By Air
I traveled from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi by air. You can find the Airport bus in the parking of KL Sentral, the fare is about RM 12 ($2.6). The bus takes 1 hour and 15 minutes to reach the KLIA2 airport.
Kuala Lumpur Airport Terminal 2 is pretty big. I had a domestic flight from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi. I had check-in online and don’t need to print a boarding pass. Just showing E-boarding on the mobile phone is enough. One special thing about the airport is no security check till the check-in counter.
The flight timing is about 50 minutes and I purchased an advance ticket for RM 48 ($10.30).
If you are planning to visit Langkawi then AirAsia is the best and most convenient option to fly with. It has several flights that fly from early morning to late night. Book in advance and get reasonable rates if you have confirmed dates. I just booked an AirAsia flight for just ($3.50).

Usually, AirAsia provides a 7kg backpack that you can carry with you. If you need extra luggage book in advance. At the Airport, they charge more as compared to booking in advance. It is a domestic flight it is suggested to you come at least 2 hours before your scheduled departure time to complete the necessary check-in and security procedures easily.
Onboard Experience with AirAsia
AirAsia tries to provide a relaxed and enjoyable onboard experience for its travelers. AirAsia doesn’t provide meals because this is a low-budget airline. If you are hungry you can purchase on board. They don’t even give you a FREE water bottle. As a budget traveler, flight time is about 50 minutes and you have to control yourself for food.
💡 Pro Tip: You can refill your water bottle after check-in and security check. They won’t ask about it to empty your water bottle. I did it the same as I have an AirAsia flight.
Arrival in Langkawi
Upon landing at Langkawi International Airport, you will be welcomed by the island’s serene atmosphere and warm tropical breeze.
I landed at the sunset time almost it dark. Just came outside from the airport in a minute because of no checked baggage. I just walked little bit to get little far from Airport to get some cheap transport like bus or any other public transport. You can take taxi from airport.
I asked from locals where can I get public transport. Local says no public transport in Langkawi island. So, I booked a Grab (Taxi) to get to the accommodation.

Public Transportation Langkawi
There is no public transportation in Langkawi Island. There are some private taxis like Grab or you can ask from motor bike. Sometimes they are using as a motorbike taxi.
I stayed 2 days in Langkawi and come back from Langkawi to Kuala Perlis by Ferry that costs around RM 17 and ferry takes 1 hour to reach.
